Immigration Wave 2014

Interactive Data Visualization

Asians become the largest stream of U.S immigration.

Asians took up almost 43% of total new lawful permanent residents in 2014. Did you know that over 60% of new permanent residents took the family path to obtain their residency? Recently, we could hear some voices or advocates proposing a bill to narrow the route.

My goal was to make the visual representation of data speak for itself about the correlation between lawful permanent residents and the class of admission in the foreign-born population segment.

Statement of Interest

In the 2016 U.S. presidential election, I was intrigued by one of the top issues of unauthorized immigration in the U.S. I hence attempted to find the relevant statistics on immigration. However, since they were undocumented, I thus chose a more concrete data sets on new U.S. lawful permanent resident population from the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), to further analyze the correlation among the new lawful permanent residents and the foreign-born population in 2014.

A chance to find answers to my own questions

After sifting through the data sets, I sorted out my doubts. Then put questions together as a starter list below to help better outline the narrative and the diagram. The challenge to me was to accurately deliver the right messages to the audience in an interactive way and pare down information clutter from the data visualization.

  • What was the proportion of the total undocumented immigrant population to the entire U.S. foreign-born population?
  • What does each of the classes of admission stand for?
  • What did regions or countries of birth account for the majority of 2014 new U.S. lawful permanent resident population?
  • What percentage was the new lawful permanent resident population of the total U.S. foreign-born population in 2014?
  • What was the proportion of the population of each region or country to the new lawful permanent resident population?

How it turned out? Check out more details here.
